Red Faction Armageddon is the fourth installment in the popular sci-fi series which plays a little like Total Recall. The key differentiator between the Red Faction games and any other is that almost anything you see in Armageddon and its predecessor can be blown up, smashed or destroyed.

Armageddon is the most vibrant looking offering in the series to date but it's more on-the-rails than I like my sandbox games to be. The highlight of this game is the Magnet Gun which lets you smash two objects, or opponents, into each other. The plot isn't up to much - think terrorists and aliens on Mars, again - and the single-player campaign is over long and repetitive. This is a release that's really much more fun when you're breaking things or beating down your friends online.

Disappointingly, the developers have done away with Red Faction: Guerrilla's quirky competitive multiplayer mode which revolved around back-packs and power ups. Instead Armageddon has a co-op survival mode called Infestation and even though this is great fun too it's hard to understand why both types couldn't have been included.

Still, smashing Mars up brings out the inner toddler in me.
