Don't be put off by possibly the worst title a game has ever had. They may has well have called it 'Generic Race Game'. But, apart from having an obviously lacking marketing department, the creators of Grid have both a keen knowledge of what race fans want and also the skills to do it.

The game is loud, brash and colourful. You are thrown right into the mix at the beginning, and told to 'finish' - no more than that! As you race, a gruff-yet-friendly voice barks in your ear: "Well done, you're in 3rd", or "Ease up on this corner" - helpful advice that I appreciated. But the coup de grace, the single great achievement of this game is Flashback - the ability to jump back a corner or two instead of having to restart the whole race. Genius!

Graphics are beautiful and elegant and compliment the carnage that ensues: I would describe myself as having an aggressive race profile, which I quickly learnt amounts to wrecking a lot of cars!

That aside, I think that this racer has a home amongst the big boys: part sim, part arcade, all fun!
