Gone are the days when PES was the dominant force in football sims. There used to be a day when you wouldn't even have to think about the PES v FIFA debate. But when the PS2 and the original Xbox succumbed to the wave of next gen consoles, something strange happened: FIFA became brilliant and PES, well, became a bit rubbish. And after the brilliant FIFA 10, released earlier this month, showed no signs of relinquishing its newly acquired crown, it was up to the guys behind PES to come back fighting and reclaim that very same crown they held in their possession for so long. Have they succeeded? In one word: no.

That's not to say PES 2010 isn't any good. It's a solid alternative to FIFA 10 – in fact, for anyone who prefers the more arcade-like, slightly easier to master approach to their footy games, this is undoubtedly the game for them. There's just no radical improvement over previous years. It still feels the same as last year – clunky.

But, there is a lot of fun to be had here, with the arcade gameplay ensuring nearly every game is a cracker. Also, for he master league enthusiasts, Champions and Europa Leagues have been incorporated into the season mode which is a neat touch and adds a nice layer of authenticity.

It's not FIFA, but will still provide hours of entertainment when friends are around.
