Developed by Square Enix, makers of the Final Fantasy series, Mindjack, unlike the more famous and revered RPG titles, is a straight third-person shooter, a co-operative, duck for cover and shoot frantically at multiple enemies game in a similar vein to the acclaimed Gears of Wear. Unfortunately that's about the only comparison Mindjack can have to Gears as it quickly becomes evident Squares take on the third person genre is a work in progress, a possible blueprint to something better a few years down the line.
There are welcome and original ideas in the game – the prized-asset of Mindjack is the ability to take over the minds of enemies to your advantage, jump into any character of the game and play out as you see fit, an option that's extended into the multiplayer with friends easily able to insert themselves into a game at any time.
But where the game comes down is in its lack of polish, which is surprising seeing as the Final Fantasy series were always renowned for their presentation and Hollywood veneer. Mindjack never feels anything more than a sub-standard third-person shooter, where every attribute fails to rise above average.
