Ah yes, okay, right, well.. This is going to be a tricky review. If I concentrate on the many overwhelming flaws of this game, I'm going to be lynched by the fanboys; however, if I highlight the amazing graphics and addictive gameplay, I'm going to alienate the casual gamers. I'll endeavor to give you as balanced a review as I can.

For those of you out of the loop, Metal Gear Solid follows the story of Snake. The game encourages you to use sneak tactics over combat, a la Splinter Cell (but this came way before Clancy's black-clad spy).

Okay, the cons: I am not sure why they bothered to let us control Snake at all - this is essentially an interactive movie, as there seems to be more cut scenes then there are sections to play.

Now the plusses: the graphics are unparalleled, the use of live action interspersed with cutting-edge animation is just breathtaking, and sometimes I wished I didn't have to control Snake - I'd have rather watched it as a movie!

Once the game settles into itself, it becomes highly enjoyable. I just think a lot of people won't have the patience to get past the endless babble.
