The quickly released follow-up to Left 4 Dead is set in New Orleans and based around four new survivors who have to fend off zombies and get out of the city. There's five lengthy co-op campaigns and each one takes an hour or two on the normal difficulty level.
Players can also attempt each of the co-op campaigns as zombies via the versus mode. There is a single-player mode but it really just serves as a tutorial for the multiplayer. Co-op is where Left 4 Dead 2 lives and dies. And players who don't communicate with their team can expect to die, a lot.
The real value of Left For Dead is that no single campaign ever plays out the same thanks to the AI Director which decides when to spawn zombies, weapons and health kits. The AI Director is a lot more unforgiving this time even on the normal difficulty level.
The carnival grounds, marshes and streets of this game are a lot more detailed and colourful than the those environments in the original. Players can now wield frying pans, chainsaws and katanas. There's also three new bosses including the jockey which jumps on top of and attempts to control players.
Left 4 Dead 2 does everything a sequel should but it still won't appeal to those who dislike online gaming or talking into their headsets.
