There was a level in Modern Warfare where Russia invaded the suburbs of leafy America and the player had to battle enemy soldiers on the street and in people's houses. Homefront is that level expanded to fill an entire game. To be fair HomeFront pays a lot of attention to depicting what things would be like if North Korea launched World War III and invaded the US. The opening section of the game is the strongest depicted in any shooter in recent years and it's as violent as you'd expect for a shooter pitching itself firmly at the adult gamer.
However, it quickly becomes apparent that Kaos have been shocked and awed by Infinity Ward's recent offerings and despite their somewhat original setting (which was authored by scriptwriter John Milius of Red Dawn fame) the game is yet another me-too in an seemingly endless list of on the rails shooters.
Unforgiving checkpoint? Check. Re spawning enemies? Check. A gameplay style that forces you to die over and over before progressing? Check. The multiplayer is somewhat more nuanced. The large scale vehicular based combat is akin to a previous Kaos release: Front Lines: Fuel of War and it rewards skilful players appropriately.
The question is will you be playing it in six months?
