First-person shooters are almost an institution of gaming; we are very rarely surprised by them. You run through the level shooting at soldiers, aliens, zombies and monsters. Sometimes there are vehicles, sometimes there aren't. Sometimes there are puzzles, sometimes there aren't. However, very rarely is there more then one way to finish the level.

Well, this is where Frontlines comes in. Instead of having a straight line to battle through, instead of having an end boss to blow bits out of, you have a battlefield. You have objectives to capture or destroy, but you can do it anyway you see fit.

Frontlines offers superb graphics and awesome sound. There is a fantastic re-spawning system, so when you die you are put right back in the action and don't have to repeat tasks. Unfortunately, it's both too short and too easy: on normal mode, I ran through the game in a day, but on hard it may take you a little longer. But there are bonuses and extras to unlock, and since you can play the levels any way you see fit, there is a certain staying power to it.
