These days there are constantly rotating libraries of games that go free to play, free to keep, free to try - and it can be hard to keep up with it all.

You can end up missing something that you could have gotten for nothing, just because you didn't hear about it in time. Or sometimes, new games come to a service that you already subscribe to, so while it's technically not free because you’ve to pay for the subscription, it's no more than you’re already paying monthly or annually if you’ve already signed up.
