The FIFA series towers over Call of Duty; not only is there a new release every year but the latest edition FIFA 12, is actually the nineteenth game in the series. It follows on the relatively successful FIFA 11 which introduced a host of new features aimed at hardcore football fans.

The latest release features three significant game play additions. These include: a new physics engine for collisions, a revamped system for defending a more accurate dribbling controls. The result is a more nuanced, fluid affair which forces players to put more emphasis on defending and technique rather than simply button mashing. The game also includes a number of minor tweaks ranging from the obligatory roster update a pleasing career mode that's far easier to navigate compared to the one in FIFA 11.

Nineteen games in and the developers clearly know how to polish their products - the detail on the player models, the commentary (sans Andy Grey) and the overall presentation are all outstanding. FIFA 12 is a game made by football fans for football fans. However, some gamers might be put out by having to fork out every year to get access to the latest rosters but then EA are hardly known for releasing such additions as downloadable content. Still FIFA 12 is what it is - a step forward for the franchise and the best football game on consoles today.
