As the Old Testament says: "Wolfenstein begat Doom, Doom begat Quake and from this great Quake, Halo was begotten!"

Quake was a seminal game that shaped the future for the first person shooters. Sure, it was uncannily like Doom: but while games like Duke Nukem had sidestepped certain elements, Quake plunged into an unknown world offering online play way before it was trendy. In fact, so successful was its multiplayer (and don't forget this was dial-up) that they began creating a title that was solely for their newly created web family. Quake Arena was born, and it was shite!

So now years on, and a couple of decent sequels later, they are taking another crack at breaking the multiplayer market. This time, I think they've gone and done it!

There is no storyline, per se; a war wages between Human and Strogg, you pick a side and start shooting - simple as that, really. Apart from minor bugging problems, the graphics, while not cutting edge, hold up. The AI is eerily good and the battles, pure mayhem!

If you are looking for online carnage or the best 'Bot AI in ten years, we may have a winner for you.
