With 'Dune' riding high again after Dennis Villeneuve's Oscar-winning blockbuster, the universe is continuing its expansion into the world of video games.

'Dune: Awakening' comes to us from developers Funcom, known for their MMOs 'The Secret World' and 'Age Of Conan'.

Announced at Gamescom, the trailer sees our hero wandering the desert of Arrakis before coming face-to-face with a gigantic sand worm.

The trailer is scant on details, but a press release from the developers shed a bit more light on the game.

"Dune: Awakening combines the grittiness and creativity of survival games with the social interactivity of large-scale, persistent multiplayer games to create a unique and ambitious Open World Survival MMO."

"Rise from survival to dominance in a vast and seamless Arrakis shared by thousands of players.  Head into unmapped sectors and be the first to discover secrets and riches before the coriolis storms once again shift the sands and alter the landscape. Narrowly escape colossal sandworms, build your home from shelter to mighty base, and traverse the dunes in iconic vehicles from the universe."

Hunt for spice blooms and deploy your harvester, then protect it from rival factions in fast-paced, deadly combat that shifts seamlessly from armored groundcars to ornithopters in the sky. Plot your rise to power and build your influence within the Landsraad through careful intrigue."

The game is said to take influence from Dennis Hebert's novels as well as the hit 2021 film, and for fans of the franchise getting the chance to wonder the sands of Arrakis will be a major appeal for fans.

No word on a release date for 'Dune Awakening', but here's a trailer to tide fans over.
