Despite what you might think of mobile gaming, there's been a couple of decent examples through the years.

Not only that, adapting classic games to mobile has worked quite well and has proven popular with time-poor players. 'Super Mario Run' is a prime example of adapting a well-worn, familiar game format into the touchscreen world, and it looks like 'Castlevania' is the next legacy game to attempt something similar.

'Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls' looks every bit as glossy and sharp as every previous entry, and will launch on iOS and Android at some stage this year. The game, which was first announced in 2018, is the first game in the franchise's 33-year history made exclusively for mobile, and marks nearly five years since a new 'Castlevania' game was made by Konami. The first gameplay footage and hands-on testing took place a couple of days ago at the Tokyo Gaming Show, with early reactions being relatively positive.

Konami has had a weird relationship with 'Castlevania', having put it through reboots with 'Lords of Shadow', and then pushing on with Netflix's adaptation before going back to its anime roots with this most recent effort. Despite its storied legacy, 'Castlevania' is something of a nostalgia trip for people than actively trying to do new things with the franchise.

Still, maybe people just want a good-old fashioned side-scrolling hack and slash platformer on their phones? Who knows.

No release date has been set for 'Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls', but it is expected some time this year.
