The Virginians present MANY YOUNG MEN OF TWENTY in the Ramor Theatre on Thursday 5th, Friday 6th & Saturday 7th March Written by John B. Keane and directed by Vincent Lee, ‘Many Young Men of Twenty’ John B. deals with the mass exodus of young men and women from Ireland to England especially in the fifties and sixties. There is the sadness experienced by the young as they left and the parents who were left behind, the hopes and fears of those emigrating and the thoughts and feelings of those who remained. One of those who remained was Peg Finnerty-a single mother who was determined not to emigrate and who felt for those who were leaving: ‘I see the two of ‘em sittin down on their seats, an’ their faces white an’ the young fella cryin’. But this play has plenty of light-hearted moments too and is punctuated by songs that suggest happier times and a people who knew how to laugh.
