Upon fathering triplets through IVF, the filmmaker was inspired to explore the nature of technology and ask what it means to be human. In this film ‘Welcome to the Machine’ filmmaker Avi Zev Weider engages futurists, scientists, scholars and anti-technology advocates to uncover a big-picture view of our ongoing relationship with technology. This special screening and panel discussion will explore the human relationship with technology and will allow the public to discuss with experts a future where technology will dominate our lives and our healthcare.

The panel, which will be moderated by broadcaster Aine Lawlor, will feature film director and executive producer Avi Zev Weider, UCD’s Dr Brian Caulfield, Dr Dermot Power, consultant in geriatric medicine at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Avril Daly of Fighting Blindness and Ann O’Dea CEO and co-founder of siliconrepublic.

A team from Ekso https://www.eksobionics.com join the event to showcase a bionics suit that enables paralyzed people to walk. Ekso is a ready-to-wear, battery-powered bionic suit - or exoskeleton - that is strapped over the user's clothing. Patients who may be appropriate for Ekso use have lower extremity weakness/paralysis due to spinal cord injury, Guillain-Barré syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, or generalized weakness caused by other conditions.

This special screening is part of an ongoing Public Engagement Programme of UCD Research, UCD Science Expression, which uses film to explore new directions and ideas in science.
