Ouroboros Theatre Ireland in collaboration with the Office Of Public Works continue to break new ground in staging Irish plays in historically relevant sites across Ireland. This summer Ouroboros will undertake twenty performances of Brian Friel's Translations in eight OPW locations. Directed by Andrew Flynn, Translations is regarded as Brian Friel's theatrical masterpiece. Set in Donegal in 1833, where the tour opens, the play tells the story of a small community on the brink of irrevocable change. Translations has compelled audiences the world over to consider the fundamental nature of language, its connection to culture and its relationship to power. The sites for the Translations Tour were chosen for their geographical, historical and physical appropriateness with performances taking place at locations associated with The Famine, language revival and political dissent. The iconic sites, Kilmainham Gaol, Kilkenny Castle, Cahir Castle, Barryscourt Castle, Co. Cork, Muckross House Co Kerry, Portumna Castle, Athenry Castle and Donegal Castle all have the potency to compliment and augment the power of the text.
