Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (1948)

This visually stunning film from acclaimed British film duo, Powell and Pressburger, was adapted from the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. Starring Marius Goring, Moira Shearer and Anton Walbrook, it tells the tale of a ballerina whose life begins to change dramatically and tragically when she starts to wear a pair of red shoes. Martin Scorsese referred to it as ‘truly the most beautiful technicolor film ever made’. The film won two Academy Awards and is a classic of British cinema.
