Following last year's sell-out success of 'Der Golem', Christ Church Cathedral is delighted to welcome back acclaimed, eclectic music ensemble, 3epkano, performing a live score to the legendary Gothic classic, 'The  Cabinet of Dr Caligari'.

A huge commercial and critical success in its day, it is one of the most influential films of the German Expressionist movement and considered the first true horror film as well as introducing the 'twist ending' in cinema. It was inspired by the unsolved murder of a girl during a carnival and directed by acclaimed German director Robert Wiene. renowned Expressionistic designers Hermann Warm, Walter Roehrig and Walter Reimann, all affiliated to the magazine Sturm, designed the innovative painted sets that included distorted perspectives, twisted shapes and sharp angles.

The film tells the tale of showman, Dr Caligari (Werner Krauss), who appears in a small town with his marvel, Cesare the Somnambulist (Conrad Veidt), a man who has been asleep for 23 years and is now under Caligari's murderous, hypnotic control. At night, he slithers through the town murdering people on the doctor’s orders until a young student becomes suspicious when his friend is found dead. As a series of disturbing events unfold, the townspeople discover a truth, hiding something even more sinister then they could ever have imagined.
