“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again”
A whirlwind romance. A gothic mansion. The ghastly Mrs Danvers. Get ready as Film Fatale presents Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca — a sumptuous psychological thriller like no other.
Film Fatale will screen Rebecca on Saturday 7th June at Dublin’s Sugar Club. The screening will be followed by The Fabulous Forties Vintage Party — a night of vintage fashion, retro music, classic cocktails and good old-fashioned fun.
Few Hollywood classics combine gothic romance with glamour to such dark, atmospheric effect. Based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier, Hitchcock’s Oscar-winning filmsees a timid young bride (perfectly portrayed by Joan Fontaine) move with her new husband, Max de Winter (the ever charming Laurence Olivier) to Manderlay, a large country estate in Cornwall.
Manderley is a house as beautiful as it is monstrous and is ruled by the dreaded servant Mrs Danvers, a woman who adored Max’s first wife Rebecca who died in mysterious circumstances. Mrs Danvers despises the new bride and summons the ghost of Rebecca in everything that she does.
This heady brew of gothic romance, infatuation and jealousy was Hitchcock’s first American film and remains to this day one of his masterpieces from the 1940s.
The Film Fatale Fabulous Forties Vintage Dance will follow the screening, where you can swing dance to the melodious sounds of 40s sweethearts harmony trio, The Bugle Babes, and jitterbug to resident retro DJs The Andrews Sisters’ Brothers, who will be playing music from the film’s era as well as your favourite tunes from twenties through to the seventies.
Dress in the sartorial manner that Hitchcock would have allowed at the famous Manderley — your most dashing suit or glittering vintage ensemble, emulate the stars of the film or embrace The Fabulous Forties.
Sit back in the sumptuous surroundings of the Sugar Club, enjoy a classic signature cocktail designed especially for the night, have the Film Fatale usherettes serve you popcorn while watching one of the greatest thrillers unfold. Then dance the night away as if you were a guest at the Manderley summer ball.
