Adapted from Jane Austen's drawing-room comedy, Robert Leonard's film centres around the romantic trials and tribulations faced by a quintet of husband-hungry sisters during the 1800s. Laurence Olivier is cast as the dashing, if cool, Mr Darcy and Greer Garson plays Elizabeth, the eldest of the five Bennet daughters whose mother finds them a drain on her purse and energy. How will she ever find husbands for them all! The New York Times film critic praised the film as ‘the most deliciously pert comedy of old manners, the most crisp and crackling satire in costume that we in this corner can remember ever having seen on the screen.’
