National winner of the Gathering of the Year Event in 2013, In Humbert's Footsteps 2014 promises a spectacular 1798 battle re-enactment along with several other fantastic Living History Events this June 25th-29th in Ballina, Co. Mayo.
Hundreds of authentically uniformed and armed re-enactors from France, Ireland, England, Northern Ireland, Spain, Switzerland and Germany are travelling to Ballina to participate in this year's re-enactments. The main battle spectacle will take place on Sunday, 29 June. This will be preceded on Friday night by the torchlight arrival of the French through Bóthar na Sop - just as they did in 1798.
Saturday will see the French, British and United Irishmen set up camp in the town's old military barracks, the actual site of their respective camps in 1798 - this camp will be open to the public. On Sunday, the streets of Ballina will play host to one of the largest Napoleonic battle re-enactments ever staged in Ireland when the blue-clad French, the British red-coats and the Irish Rebel Pikemen do battle for the town amidst the crack and smoke of muskets, the boom of cannon, and the clash of bayonet, sword and pike.
There will be lots more entertainment as well - and it is all free and family friendly!
