Dublin's Gate Theatre is no stranger to hosting big names from the acting world, and another of them will take to its stage next year.

Australian actor Hugo Weaving, best known for his roles as Elrond in the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy and as Agent Smith in 'The Matrix', will star alongside well-respected actress Olwen Fouéré in the Irish premiere of Thomas Bernhard's 'The President'.

It will run at the Gate from February 8th 2024, with previews from February 2nd, before transferring to Sydney for a run in April.

Weaving and Fouéré will play the President and First Lady in the translated version of Austrian playwright Bernhard's 1975 play.

The blurb says: "In a small, unnamed country, there has been an assassination. However, the gunmen missed their intended targets, the President and the First Lady, killing instead a loyal bodyguard and the First Lady’s beloved dog.

"As a revolution brews right outside their front door, the First Lady sits with a mixture of hysterics, rage and obsession. The President holds forth in a verbal tsunami of self- aggrandisement and vainglory, while his mistress, an actress, gambles his cash away in the blackjack room next door."
