Aithnítear go forleathan gurbh é Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 -1926) an file Gearmáinise ba mhó ó aimsir Goethe. Baineann a chuid filíochta go minic leis an deacracht a bhíonn againn caidreamh a bheith againn leis an diagacht in aois an neamhchreidimh. I measc a mhórshaothar tá na Duineser Elegien agus Die Sonette an Orpheus. Faightear liriceacht luisneach ina chuid próis chomh maith, ina measc Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge agus Briefe an einen jungen Dichter. Tá áthas ar IMRAM agus ar Fhéile Scríbhneoirí Bhaile Átha Cliath - i gcomhar leis an Goethe-Institut agus Éigse Éireann/Poetry Ireland - ceiliúradh trítheangach a dhéanamh anocht ar shaothar Rilke. Léifidh Peter Jankowski na bundánta Gearmáinise. Léifidh Celia de Fréine a leaganacha Gaeilge féin de dhánta Rilke, chomh maith le sliocht as aistriúchán Mháire Mhac an tSaoi ar na Duineser Elegien agus leagan Gaeilge Valentin Iremonger de Mariasleben. Léifidh Eva Bourke a cuid leaganacha Béarla de Rilke, luathshaothar agus Neue Gedichte san áireamh Beidh tionlacan ar an gcláirseach ó Chormac de Barra agus déanfaidh an t-ealaíontóir Margaret Lonergan ceiliúradh ar shaol Rilke le grianghraif agus ealaín ar scáileán.

Liam Carson, stiúrthóir IMRAM, Féile Litríochta na Gaeilge, a chruthaigh an tionscadal seo.

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) is widely seen as the greatest poet in the German language since Goethe. His haunting poetry often deals with the difficulty of a relationship with the divine in an age of disbelief. His major works include Duino Elegies and Sonnets to Orpheus. His prose work is also infused with an incandescent lyricism, and includes The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge, and Letters to a Young Poet.

Tonight IMRAM and Dublin Writers Festival – in conjunction with the Goethe Institute and Poetry Ireland - are proud to stage a tri-lingual celebration of Rilke’s work. Peter Jankowski will read the original German texts. Celia de Fréine will read her own Irish language versions of Rilke, along with selections from Máire Mhac an tSaoi’s translations of Duino Elegies and Valentin Iremonger’s translation of The Life of Mary. Eva Bourke will read her new English versions of Rilke, including selections from his earlier work and from New Poems. The poets will read to musical accompaniment from harpist Cormac de Barra, and artist Margaret Lonergan will create on-screen projections of photos and art celebrating Rilke’s life.

This event is curated by Liam Carson, director of the IMRAM Irish Language Literature Festival.
