Dodge is the dying patriarch of a rural, mid-west American family. His defiant wife, Halie, indulges herself in fantasy and the high-life, bringing home the amorous protestant minister, Fr Dewis, Their youngest son, the brutal Bradley, torments the men in the family. The eldest son, Tilden, has recently returned home, mysteriously broken and dependent. His own son, the up-beat Vince, decides to drop in on his grandparents for a friendly visit. He brings his girl friend with him, Shelley, in whose beautiful and humane presence Dodge will finally be able to bear his soul.
