Using doppelganger, mirror reflection, the merging of image and likeness, Wojtowycz creates images that perform a kind of autoerotic act evoking an abysmal, highly stylized parallel world imbued with death, sex, bodily fetish, and Hollywood dreams. Gay porno, posters, advertising, magazines, and family studio portraits are appropriated to generate products that are more pornographic, artistic, emotional, and idealised than the originals. Hybrid images conjure up imprecise memories, emotions, fears, desire and longing. The patina of Wojtowycz’s work is as artificial and staged as the culture which it references, simultaneously hijacking and replacing it and serving as surrogate for an imaginary, excessive life that has only taken place in its own reproduction.
