A bit of a shambles given the nominations, the 68th Golden Globes (see the Red Carpet happenings here) fell into expected winner’s territory after a seemingly endless repeat of the Emmy Winners from a few months back. The Best Actress Oscar is now firmly between Annette Benning and Natalie Portman - with the latter giving a far superior performance. Best Actor went to Firth, but should’ve gone to Gosling or Franco. The British actor now has serious momentum and is clearly the favourite for The Academy Awards. The real winner was The Social Network, and thank god for that. Best film, director and screenplay should see the best reviewed film of the past 10 years continue that trend into the Oscars as well

The actual ceremony was a typically banal affair, occasionally enlightened by a daring Gervais put-down. Although the opening Scientology gag was never bettered as the night went on. Christian Bale was strangely affable picking up his Best Supporting Actor gong, while Downey JR was hilarious announcing the nominees for Best Actress: Musical or Comedy.

Generally speaking it was boring, and there were no surprises. I still think, for the Oscars, Portman for Best Actress, Firth for Actor, and The Social Network for the trio it won last night as well.
