Whisper it ever so slightly, but there's a very good chance that The Predator could be one of the highlights of 2018.
What are we basing that on, you ask? Well, for one it's got Shane Black attached as director and co-writer with Fred Dekker of Monster Squad fame. Not only that, the assembled cast includes the seriously underrated Thomas Jane (who just wants his kids back), Narcos alum Boyd Holbrook and Keegan-Michael Key of Key & Peele. Also, let's all take a moment and be thankful that Conor McGregor passed on all of this as well.
Anyway, another cast member involved is Jake Busey, who confirmed in an interview with PopCulture.com that he is in fact playing the son of his father's character in Predator 2. The elder Busey played DEA Agent Keyes, who worked alongside Danny Glover's character and was (spoiler alert) killed pretty brutally by the Predator.
According to Busey, The Predator will be set after Predator 2 - which was set in the far-flung future of 1997 - and "definitely falls in line with the original franchise in that it does focus on the technology that the Predators have." Busey went on, saying that The Predator examines "what the goal of the Predators is, and what their modus operandi, and why they come to the planet, and that type of thing. It's definitely in line with the original franchise."
This all tracks with Thomas Jane's interview from a couple of weeks ago, where he pretty much laid out the plot and the opening act of the film. For his part, Shane Black hasn't posted anything or discussed the film on his personal Twitter account, but it could be that he's too deep into post-production.
Either way, we're definitely hyped for this.
