Although there's been no sign of a teaser - beyond a couple of posters and a set photo here or there - The Predator is slowly but surely building up some excitement for its release in August 2018.
The film, directed by Shane Black and written by Fred Dekker and Black, is currently in post-production and the first details of the plot have made their way online - thanks to an interview Thomas Jane did with podcast Shadow Nation. As Jane describes it, the story focuses on a group of Iraq / Afghanistan veterans who are thrown together with another soldier who claims to have seen a UFO.
"We’re at the VA hospital and we’re in group therapy and of course, somebody flips out – this is backstory, I don’t think we really see this – somebody flips out and we all get arrested and get thrown onto the bus to go down to the hospital and they throw this other guy on the bus too."
"And he’s a guy they’ve actually marked to kill him because he’s seen a UFO, he’s seen the Predator ships come down so they lock him up and throw him in with us lunatics. They’re going to take that bus, drive it down to a ditch and shoot us all just to get rid of this one guy. But, of course, we take the bus over and we’re all like ‘fuck that, man, let’s go kill these fucking Predators ourselves.’ And we’re just crazy enough to believe that this guy really did see a UFO and there’s these aliens out there. So that’s kinda cool!"
A bunch of PTSD, shellshocked soliders that includes Boyd Holbrook, Thomas Jane, Keegan-Michael Key and Alfie Allen hunting a group of Predators and all of it scripted by Shane Black and Fred Dekker.
Quite honestly, this is either going to work amazingly or it'll be fail horribly - but the idea seems neat and what made the 1987 original so popular was primarily down to its quotable dialogue. Considering it's Shane Black and Fred Dekker writing the whole thing, expect one-liners galore.
The Predator arrives on August 3rd, 2018.
