As 'The Lion King' is set to roar into cinemas later this month, Disney is going full throttle into its back catalogue for live-action remakes.

'Mulan', released originally in 1998, told the Chinese folk tale of Hua Mulan, a young woman who enlisted in the Imperial Army and impersonated a man, becoming a fearsome warrior in the process. The original animated movie featured the singing talents of Donny Osmond and Eddie Murphy as a mystical dragon spirit called Mushu, and received several Golden Globe and Oscar nominations in the process.

The live-action version is to be directed by Niki Caro, with a cast that includes Donnie Yen, Jet Li, Gong Li and Tzi Ma, with Liu Yifei taking on the titular role of Mulan.

As you'll probably guess from the trailer, 'Mulan' is not going to be a musical like the original and certain elements and characters have been dropped from the update. That said, it's understood that the character of Mushu will still play a part, but not to the extent it did in the original.

'Mulan' arrives in Irish cinemas on March 27th, 2020.
