The big loser was 'Mortal Engines', which is set to become one of the biggest flops of the year.

The young adult fantasy adventure had a budget of just over $100 million and cost tens of millions in global marketing.

Executives at rival studios estimate that the movie will lose upwards of $100 million. Some believe it could lose over $125 million.

The movie made $42 million globally in its opening weekend. Domestically, it made a mere $7.5 million at the box office.

The film still has a few international markets left to open in, including China. However, it is playing in most major territories, including Russia, the U.K., Australia, and Korea, and has failed to find much traction in any of those locations.

Produced by Peter Jackson, the filmmaker behind 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit', 'Mortal Engines' is Christian Rivers' directorial debut.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, it sees cities ride on wheels and consume each other to survive.

Hera Hilmar, Robert Sheehan, Leila George, Hugo Weaving and Stephen Lang star.

Critics slammed the movie, which may have contributed to its bombing at the box office. It is also based on a book series that isn't widely known in the US. Moreover, audiences may be suffering from YA fantasy adventure fatigue.
