A cryptic tweet from the official account confirms what era the Amazon series will be set.

Although there are still no official details or plot synopsis, Amazon is choosing to slowly release tidbits of information on the billion-dollar series as it nears our screens.

A few weeks ago, the official Twitter account posted a link to an interactive map of Middle-Earth. This Thursday just gone, the account made another post - updating the interactive map with place-names, and confirming that the series will be set in the Second Age.

So, what's that mean? Well, for starters, the series will almost definitely NOT feature a young Aragorn, as the character was born in the Third Age. The end of the Second Age was seen in the very first 'Lord of the Rings' movie, 'The Fellowship of the Ring'.

When Aragorn's descendant, Isildur, cut off Sauron's hand and retrieved the One Ring, that was generally considered to be the end of the Second Age and the beginning of the Third Age - which is when 'Lord of the Rings', the film trilogy, not the Amazon series, was set.

It was also when Gondor and Arnor were founded as nations-in-exile by Elendil, and when the last alliance between humans and elves existed before the events of 'Lord of the Rings'. More pointedly, however, the Second Age saw the forging of the One Ring by Sauron and the creation of Rivendell, the elven stronghold that featured in all of the adapted Tolkien movies.

Because it's JRR Tolkien of course, all these storylines have been mapped out and carefully collated from decades ago, meaning that there is literally years upon years of stories that can be adapted onto the screen.

There's still no air date, and no casting has been announced for any of the roles, so for now, it's simply a case of waiting to see what's announced next.
