Creator Robert Kirkman says it'll be very different from the TV series

The creator recently revealed what tone we can expect from his upcoming 'The Walking Dead' movie spin-off which focusses on the once-central character. And Zombies. Lots and lots of zombies.

'The Walking Dead' has had so many spin-offs. So many in fact, that it's hard to keep up with each of them. Following the success of the comic book, many of us first heard about the franchise when it was turned into a post-apocalyptic TV series in 2010.

Fast-forward 11 years, and the original series is still going, but will wrap up after eleven seasons in 2022. There have also been spin-offs 'Fear The Walking Dead' which is entering its seventh season; 'The Walking Dead: World Beyond' was released recently on Amazon Prime, focussing on a younger generation born into the zombie-infested world; there's a Daryl and Carol spin-off in the works, following the two fan favourite characters from the original series; and there's also 'Tales of the Walking Dead' which will be an anthology series. Phew.

And that's just the TV series. Following his season nine departure, Rick Grimes, played by Andrew Lincoln, will head up a trilogy of movies based on the character. Announced a couple of years ago, the movie will be solely focussed on Rick, as opposed to the TV series which was ensemble-lead.

Creator Robert Kirkman, who spoke with ComicBook.com recently, said: "I think that the show is very much an ensemble story and this is very much Rick story.

"So, I think being able to focus more on Rick as a character and do more with him is really cool. I think it's gonna be a very different kind of Walking Dead story, which is really exciting. You know, when you're doing something like this you have to make sure that it makes sense for it to be a movie.

"This isn't just some kind of expansion of what you're expecting from the show. This is something that's gonna be very different but it's gonna be the Rick Grimes that we all know and love. And I'm very excited for people to finally see it when it's released in 2032."

Whether that last line was a joke or a typing error, we don't know. The first movie is scheduled to begin shooting in spring of this year.

But - will anyone be interested in watching it? Sure, it'll feature Michonne once again, but haven't we had enough post-apocalyptic movies, TV shows, and real life happenings already? It will be interesting to see how 'The Walking Dead' movie franchise turns out.
