Take... on... zombies?
"When you're lost in the darkness, look for the light."
One of 2023's most highly anticipated TV series isn't all that far away, and a brand new trailer for 'The Last of Us' has dropped to tease what's in store for us once January 2023 rolls around.
Pedro Pascal ('The Mandalorian) and Bella Ramsey ('Game of Thrones') star as Joel and Ellie in this survival horror series, based on the popular video game series from PlayStation and Naughty Dog.
We pick up this storyline 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed and overrun with all sorts of flesh-eating zombies. Joel has been tasked with smuggling this 14-year-old girl out of the oppressive quarantine zone, and the pair begin a journey which sees them travel across the US - meeting all types of untrustworthy people. And a few fungus-covered zombies along the way too, naturally.
Check out the new trailer for 'The Last of Us' season one, set to A-ha's 'Take on Me', which begins on Sky Atlantic and NOW on January 16, 2023.
There are a few more recognisable faces showing up along the pair's journey through the US. Murray Bartlett ('The White Lotus') stars as Frank, Nick Offerman ('Parks and Recreation') will play Bill, Gabriel Luna ('Agents of SHIELD') stars as Tommy and Anna Torv ('Mindhunter') plays Tess.
Series creators HBO is hoping that 'The Last of Us' will be another big tentpole series for the premium service, joining the likes of other recent hits such as 'House of the Dragon', 'Euphoria' and 'Succession'. There has been a lot of money pumped into this post-apocalyptic sci-fi, with each episode reportedly costing upwards of $10 million. The total budget for the series is in the "hundred of millions" according to figures released last year.
So let's hope 'The Last of Us' manages to hypnotise the audience during the grim January viewing period next year, because multiple seasons are certainly on the cards for this mega-franchise. And now that 'The Walking Dead' is winding down, there might be space for another zombie-filled series to sink our teeth into.
