Did someone say "overkill"?
So we all know what happened at the beginning of 2020... let's hope that this news is not a sign of something similar happening all over again.
Is the winter edition coming back from the dead? It appears so... Hot off the press news from today is that 'Love Island' will be getting two seasons in 2023.
We think we may need a sit down after this. Or a dip in the pool? We need something because we're a little shook.
The ITV Press Centre revealed the announcement this afternoon, which is in line with Lifted Entertainment and the launch of a new streaming service - ITVX. A brand new edition of the reality competition will begin in the New Year, meaning that the winter edition of 2020 is getting a follow-up.
The official press release reads: "As TV’s biggest show across 16-34 year olds, 'Love Island' will kick start the New Year with a fresh batch of Islanders heading to South Africa on a quest for love and romance. In the villa of their dreams, their stay in paradise will serve up everything from bombshell arrivals to hideaway hijinks.
"Meanwhile, Summer 2023 then sees the nation’s favourite dating show return to Mallorca for another eight-week run."
The latest series, which featured a Davide and Ekin-Su stand-off just last week, has been a ratings hit for the channel this year. The launch of the series at the beginning of June was viewed by 5 million viewers across all devices, which was up on the 2021 edition by +0.2 million. Altogether the first episode was watched 7.5 million times and the series as a whole has been streamed a whopping 74 million times.
Mike Spencer, Executive Producer at Lifted Entertainment, said: "After eight brilliant series, we are excited to be serving up two helpings of love in 2023 by kicking off in January at a stunning new villa in South Africa. We can look forward to more romances, bromances and everything in between as we embark on another epic year of love."
Well, there you have it, folks. Two seasons of 'Love Island' in 2023. What do you make of the news - and more importantly - will you be tuning in?
Can we get a queer version of 'Love Island'? Is that too much for us to ask?!
The current season continues tonight, which picks up after the entrance of two surprise bombshells into the villa. 28-year-old Charlie Radnedge is the latest to enter.
'Love Island' continues tonight at 9 pm on Virgin Media Two and Virgin Media Player.
