Now here’s something to look forward to.

Our favourite documentary maker is back and his new series sounds just as dark and wild as his previous ones. The BBC have announced that the new show, entitled ‘Altered States’, will examine issues around birth, sex, and death, and will explore themes like adoptions, polyamorous relationships and euthanasia. We wouldn’t expect less from Louis who has spoken about his love for another documentary series, the West Cork podcast.

‘Altered States’ was filmed in America (surprise, surprise) and promises ‘extraordinary access’ to the lives of those featured. Here’s what Theroux had to say-

"For this series we looked at the new ways Americans are approaching some of humanity’s oldest dilemmas: pregnant mums who feel unequipped to keep their babies and so pick new parents for them; the world of polyamory; and people with debilitating conditions who opt to hasten their own deaths.

"All of these stories have something a touch Utopian about them, involving a kind of idealism and forward thinking that brings new opportunities but also new risks.”

"I have been given extraordinary levels of access to courageous people and families across the United States, many of them enduring unbelievable levels of stress and anguish, and it was a privilege to be allowed into their lives in this most personal way," he said.

The first episode will examine the complex link between adoption and poverty and addiction. While no exact release date has been announced, it is expected before the end of the year.
