A return to the Rooney-verse

The highly anticipated new series based on Sally Rooney's 2017 novel premieres on RTÉ, BBC Three and Hulu in May.

The series follows Frances (Alison Oliver), a vulnerable college student living in Dublin who is best friends with her ex-girlfriend Bobbi (Sasha Lane). At a spoken word poetry event, they meet Melissa (Jemima Kirke), a writer, and her husband Nick (Joe Alwyn). While Melissa and Bobbi develop an intense flirtation, Frances embarks on an affair with Nick that threatens to destroy her friendship with Bobbi.

'Conversations With Friends' brings back a many of those behind 2020's 'Normal People,' with Element Pictures producing and director Lenny Abrahamson and writer Alice Birch returning to help helm the adaptation.

Abrahamson directs with Leanne Welham. He also executive produces, along with Rooney, Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Emma Norton, Tommy Bulfin and Rose Garnett. Birch writes with Mark O’Halloran, Meadhbh McHugh and Susan Soon He Stanton. Catherine Magee and Jeanie Igoe produce.

Filming took place around Dublin, Belfast and international locations last year.

'Normal People' became an absolute hit back in 2020, skyrocketing Irish actor Paul Mescal into stardom and becoming BBC'S most streamed series that year.

Mescal won a leading actor BAFTA for his performance as Connell. Co-star Daisy Edgar Jones also got a nod in the leading actress category.
