The crime-fighting trio is missing their Blossom

The live-action series 'Powerpuff', based on the animated franchise, has had quite the tumultuous journey so far.

Chloe Bennet, one of the leading stars of The CW's live-action remake of Cartoon Network's 'The Powerpuff Girls', has been forced to exit the project before shooting the new pilot episode.

According to Variety, the actor has stepped down from her role due to scheduling conflicts. The project, which has been shortened to 'Powerpuff', was announced last year with Chloe, Dove Cameron and Yana Perrault cast as Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, respectively.

However, with Chloe leaving the project, a new Blossom will need to be found in order for this production to continue once again. This isn't the first time that 'Powerpuff' has hit a bump in the road - the pilot that was shot earlier this year was deemed "a miss". The CW are still keen for the series to be made, so writers Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody had to go back to the drawing board for a fresher concept for the new pilot episode.

The original concept saw the three sisters leave their crime-fighting past behind them in favour of living the lives of three abrasive, unlikeable young women. According to the original script which leaked following the failed pilot, one of the lines read: "Life is one big hate boner."

Cameron and Perrault are both still attached to play Bubbles and Buttercup, as is Donald Faison as their father, Professor Drake Utonium. Interestingly, the iconic villain Mojo Jojo has also been cast, with 'Heart of Dixie' star Nicholas Podany playing a version of the character, called Joseph "Jojo" Mondel Jr. 'The Karate Kid' actor Robyn Lively also joins the cast, playing the animated series' faceless secretary to The Mayor of Townsville, Sara Bellum.

Casting for the Chloe Bennet 'Powerpuff Girls' replacement will begin later this year.
