Sky News’ Adam Boulton has come under a great deal of criticism after a tweet he sent out following an interview he conducted with Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney.

The interview had been on Brexit negotiations that had taken place last week, and many believed Boulton had been condescending and dismissive in his tone of Ireland’s position.

Boulton came under greater controversy still when he tweeted out the following:

Boulton has since defended the tweet on Sean O'Rourke's show on Radio 1. When asked if he regretted it, he replied that he didn’t because it was in response to abusive tweets he received.

He said: “I was replying to a series of abusive tweets which you can look up online, calling me the 'c' word and a 'Brit' and out of touch' and various other things which I felt were ad hominem rebukes and people appeared to feel justified simply because I had challenged an Irish minister in this context.

“I felt that what they were saying was tedious which is why I said 'bored now' and I also think that a lot of people have to understand that there are many sides to most of these political arguments.

“I think it would be a shame if the Irish in north or south, with whom I have spent a great deal of time like most journalists have over the recent decades, allowed themselves to be represented by an equivalent of the 'Cyber Nats' in Scotland or some of the 'Corbynistas' elsewhere on social media.”

He added: "There were plenty of people who agreed with me as well."
