It seems like a lifetime ago when I got a call off KC saying "WE GOT THE SLOT! Can you tell Lenny 'cause he's not answering his bleedin' phone." And in many ways it is a lifetime ago, especially given the bundle of babbies that have been produced in the interim.
Today FM announced today that KC will be leaving their lunchtime slot. The man himself is quoted as saying:
"I’ve being commuting from my home in Cork to Dublin every week for over three years now and being away from my two baby daughters and my fiancée Rachel so much, was getting far too difficult. I’m leaving my dream gig for my dream family, I think most people would do the same. Today FM has been the most incredible radio station to work for. Being on a daytime schedule with Ian Dempsey, Ray D’Arcy, Tony Fenton and Matt Cooper has being amazing. I’m returning to Cork to take up a new radio presenter and management role, and to be a professional Daddy."
KC joined Today FM back in 2010, to present his highly popular night-time show. He took over the competitive lunchtime slot in November 2012 and has spent the last 14 months entertaining 130,000 listeners - along with Lenny, Ann and Adelle. Over the last year, he has interviewed the likes of Nile Rodgers, The Kings of Leon, Muse, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and many more. He will be taking up a role with his former employer, Red FM, from April next.
KC, you're a gentleman, and the lunchtime bants will be missed hugely - but our loss is Cork's gain! All our love and best wishes to you, Fia, Robyn and the very sound soon-to-be Mrs Cunningham x.
Seeeeeeeewww.... on to the rumours. Much like last time, whispers are already reverberating regarding KC's replacement. Colm O'Sullivan, who currently hosts Today FM's The Mix Up (7pm-9pm), seems to be the name most people are mentioning. Louise Duffy, who's been hosting the morning slot (5am-7am), is also one of the front runners - Lord knows, she deserves a lie in. Bizarrely enough, there's also chatter of Will Leahy off 2FM moving over. THAT would be a travesty in my opinion, for obvious reasons. There are other rumblings that it may be time for a certain Dermot Whelan to move to National... And there's lot of folk saying "I don't care who takes over, as long as Ray Foley doesn't come back." Personally, I'd like to see Ann and Lenny take over the slot, but - like I said before - I'm a bit biased.
P.S. I feel compelled to explain the tardiness of this post; I was picking up the child from creche, and she's only just gone down for a nap there. Things took longer than usual 'cause I reversed into a pole (sorry Lenny).
