Will we still remember what a 'Squid Game' is by then?

Fans around the world who were hoping for more of the South Korean gore-fest... You've got quite the wait on your hands.

Those waiting for 'Squid Game' season two are in it for the long haul it seems. According to director Hwang Dong-hyuk, the follow-up to one of 2021's biggest TV releases won't be hitting Netflix until at least the end of 2024. And just in case you're currently in a time warp, it's only the beginning of April 2022 right now. For those bad at maths, that's two and a half years away.

The South Korean series debuted on Netflix in September 2021, and quickly began trending on the streaming service in countries around the world. Then came the memes, the piss takes and the public outcry from parents whose children watched the series and were recreating it in the playground (seriously parents, that's your fault, not Netflix's), and also the anticipation for another season.

While the bloody game came to an end during the episode nine finale, the series was left open-ended by newly red-headed main character Seong Gi-hun/Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae), who decides to not get on the flight to see his daughter. An annoying ending, but hey, it left it open for another season and a potential "in" for him to target the barbaric game's organisers.

Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke briefly with Variety about 'Squid Game' season two, saying that he "hopes to have the show stream on Netflix by the end of 2024".

Those looking for a similar 'Squid Game'-esque title from the director might be interested in a new film he's currently developing. With a working title of 'K.O. Club' or 'Killing Old People Club', the director teased that the film will be "more violent" than season one of his Netflix show and will be "another controversial film". He added that he "might have to hide from old people after the film comes out".

Dong-hyuk will return to South Korea to begin working on 'Squid Game' season two shortly.
