Gunn's next 'Guardians' project gets a big tease
"...Introducing one of the greatest MCU characters of all time."
The 'Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special' might be a long, long way away, but that doesn't mean we can't help but get a little bit excited at what it could potentially mean for the MCU going forward.
According to James Gunn, who will return to Marvel Studios to helm the upcoming project, a new and very important character is about to get their grand introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Gunn revealed the project's artwork, along with the caption: "In my incredibly subjective & admittedly often odd opinion, we'll be introducing one of the greatest MCU characters of all time. #GotGHolidaySpecial"
Now, considering this comes from the man who brought back Howard the Duck from the Marvel crypts, we're not going to wait with bated breath as to who this character could be. We're expecting a weird and wonderful b-character from the extensive comic book catalogue to make their first appearance, but you never know.
Last night during the social media outage of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, Gunn joked that he had posted a "Guardians Easter egg" on Facebook.
Set to take place in between the forthcoming 'Thor: Love and Thunder' and 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3', 'Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special' will hit Disney+ in the build-up to Christmas 2022 as an extra-long TV film. Filming on 'Guardians' is due to get underway this November.
In September, Dave Bautista, who plays Drax the Destroyer in the franchise, revealed that 'Vol. 3' will be the final entry in the 'Guardians' series and will "wrap up" their characters' stories. He also said he's done with playing the brutal (yet sensitive) character: "We work in trilogies and James Gunn has already announced that it's his last film, and when James is done I'm done."
Following old controversial tweets from James Gunn resurfacing online, and his subsequent firing from Marvel, Disney later patched things up with the director and brought him back on board for these next two 'Guardians' entries. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff will all reprise their roles for the sequel. Chris Hemsworth also expressed interest in reuniting with the space bandits as Thor.
