Dan and Dave are riding off into the sunset

D.B. Weiss and David Benioff closed a curtain on the phenomenon 'Game of Thrones' in 2019. But, there are plenty of stories still to tell in Westeros over the next few years.

According to Weiss, though, it looks like the two co-creators won't be returning for any upcoming spinoffs any time soon.

"All in, we were 11 years, probably, doing that show. When I say 11 years, it was full on, all in, all day, every day for 11 years," Weiss told EW in an interview for his upcoming Netflix feature filmĀ 'Metal Lords'.

"It was the best decade of our lives, it still kind of feels a bit like a dream. But we reached the end of what made sense for us to be involved within that world that we lived. It just felt like it was time to move on and get excited and terrified about building something else."

From the beginning, Benioff and Weiss oversaw the massive growth in popularity of their HBO show, which debuted in 2011. Adapted from George R.R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire', the show won 59 Emmy awards during its run. Despite a disappointing final season, it's still widely considered one of the greatest TV shows of all time.

"We never saw more Game of Thrones shows [as] something that made sense for us to be involved with, given where we were just as people at the time we were done with the original."

At the moment, there are multiple spinoff series and movies in development as we brace ourselves for a return to Westeros. One we'll see very soon is 'House of the Dragon', which author Martin confirmed filming had wrapped two weeks ago.

After 'Game of Throne's ended in May 2019, it was confirmed that a series starring Naomi Watts was in development. However the series, which the pilot alone cost over $30 million to make, never moved forward.

Since the show's end, Weiss and Benioff signed a multi-project deal with Netflix and are currently filming a series titled '3 Body Problem' which stars 'Thrones' alumni Liam Cunningham. John Bradley (Samwell Tarly) also features the show.
