D&D are leaving HBO and headed to streaming giant Netflix.
After the completion of 'Game of Thrones', many wondered what's next for David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the head writers and showrunners for the long-running behemoth series.
While there was talk of an original series involving some kind of alternate history vibe and a mysterious 'Star Wars' trilogy all of their own, there wasn't much else to go on. However, rumours began circulating a couple of weeks ago that D&D were headed to Netflix, and that now appears to be true.
In a statement released to media last night, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos confirmed the news. "They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members," the statement read. As for D&D, their statement was much the same. "We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home... Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them."
D&D are joining the likes of showrunners Shonda Rimes and Ryan Murphy on Netflix, with every one of them securing massive deals in the process. With Disney+ gearing up to launch and Amazon Prime's 'Lord of the Rings' series gathering pace, Netflix is in for some serious competition in the years ahead and locking down well-known showrunners like D&D is part of their strategy for remaining relevant as studios begin to form their own streaming services.
Granted, it's early days yet, but odds are that the duo will be announcing their first efforts in the next couple of months.
