Well, this is Disney after all...
Comparisons between the two movies are nothing more than that, according to actor Emma Stone.
Stone will breathe new life into one of Disney's greatest villains when we get to see how her origin story unfolds in a 1970s London. But when the trailer first released last month, due to it being a "dark" origin story, many saw similarities between 'Cruella' and 'Joker'.
While there may be some similarities between the two down-and-out characters, the actor said each film is "very different", even laughing at the thought of her being compared to the star of the 2019 supervillain outing, Joaquin Phoenix.
Stone, who is also an executive producer on the film, said in an interview with Total Film: "It's very different from 'Joker' in many ways. I would never even remotely compare myself to Joaquin Phoenix. I wish I was more like him."
Director of 'Cruella' Craig Gillespie, known for 'I, Tonya', touched on the subject saying: "There are some really deep, emotional things that Cruella's dealing with that send her to the villainous darker side. So in that sense, it is [similar].
"But it's definitely its own thing. Just to sort of reframe Cruella, I thought it was important to show this darker side of her. But there's going to be a lot of fun, a lot of humour in it. There's a lot of absolutely delightful banter and rhythm to the style of it, which is different from 'Joker'."
Given that this is a Disney movie, and not a Warner Bros. DC supervillain production, we can expect the movies to be vastly different. While the Joaquin Phoenix origin story was dark, complex, and quite harrowing, expect this to be a lot brighter in tone - with a sting in its tail as the young grifter Estella blossoms into the notorious criminal obsessed with dalmations and fur coats.
'Cruella' arrives on Disney+ on May 28, with Premier Access.
