Our new series brings you on a trip down memory lane through the Irish singles charts
If there's one thing we love, it's a dander down memory lane – especially where music is involved.
Granted, the accompanying realisation of 'That song is X years old?! Oh sh*t, I'm old' isn't always pleasant - but there's a lot to be said for a comforting wallow in nostalgia.
With that in mind, we're bringing you a new ''Throwback' series where we look at the best-selling singles in Ireland from a random year – the good, the bad and the plain awful.
We'll be swinging headlong into boyband territory, veering left for a smidge of indie-rock and going downhill for the 'men-with-acoustic guitar' era, but it's all part of the fun.
Previously, we've examined the top-selling singles from 2001, 2004 and 2006 and let's just say that there were a lot of crimes against music involved.
Today, we'll rewind to a decade ago – below, you'll find the top-selling singles in Ireland from 2011.
Although pop clearly dominates the landscape, as it is likely to do in most years (pop is short for 'popular', after all), there are a few outliers
Adele's smoochy lovelorn ballad 'Someone Like You' was one of the best-selling songs globally that year (and has since gone on to become one of the best-selling singles of all time), so it's no surprise that it's landed in at number one in Ireland. In fact, we're surprised that there aren't more Adele songs on this list, considering how huge her album '21' was that year. [Fun fact: did you know that 'Someone Like You' was co-written with Dan Wilson, frontman of indie band Semisonic?]
2011 was apparently a big year for smoochy ballads, in fact, considering Christina Perri's 'Jar of Hearts' also made the top ten, and Little Mix's cover of Damien Rice's 'Cannonball' (which was their X Factor winner's single) also makes the list.
Elsewhere, Rihanna and Calvin Harris sold well with 'We Found Love', although that song will forever remind us (and probably most Irish people) solely of the scandal with the Northern Irish farmer when she was filming the video for the song in Bangor.
Jessie J's 'Price Tag' (featuring rapper and 'Flat Earth truther' B.o.B.), one-hit-wonders LMFAO's 'Party Rock Anthem' and Maroon 5's 'Moves Like Jagger' also feature – probably cheesy pop songs best forgotten. What about Pitbull, though? The rapper certainly had a good year in 2011 with no less than two tracks in the Irish bestsellers' list: 'Give Me Everything' and 'On the Floor', his single with J-Lo.
But Jedward at number two? Really? Oh, Ireland. We'll chalk that one down to Eurovision fever and say no more.
