It's been seven years since the New York indie band's last album
2020 will mark seven years since The Strokes released their last album and 19 years since their debut - but there's good news for fans: a new record is on the way.
The New York band played a New Year's Eve gig at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, during which frontman Julian Casablancas confirmed that they would release a new album this year.
After asking the audience if they wanted to hear a new song, he said: "Yeah, we have a new album coming out soon. Surprise! 2020 here we come."
He added: "We took the 2010s – whatever the fuck they’re called – we took ’em off, but now we’ve been unfrozen and we’re back.”
They went on to debut new song 'Ode to the Mets', which was captured in fan-shot footage:
The band's last album was 2013's 'Comedown Machine' and although they have played live and toured in the intervening years, they have not released new material - apart from the 'Future Present Past' EP in 2016. Casablancas has been playing with his other band The Voidz, while other members have also released solo projects and played with other bands.
There's no word on when the album might be released, but considering it's been rumoured for the last few years, we can safely assume that work is well underway on it.
