The iconic rock frontman died in 1991 at the age of 45
Just when you thought you'd had enough of (the) Queen over the last few days, the rock band have surprised fans by announcing a new single release.
Rather than teaming up with their current frontman Adam Lambert, however, the original members have revealed that they uncovered a 'lost' song featuring the iconic Freddie Mercury.
Mercury, of course, passed away in 1991 at the age of 45, but his bandmates, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Deacon have plans to release a song called 'Face It Alone' with his voice on lead vocals.
Deacon told Zoe Ball on her radio show: "We did find a little gem from Freddie, that we’d kind of forgotten about. “It’s wonderful. Actually, it was real discovery. It’s from the 'Miracle' sessions [their album released in 1989, and the penultimate album recorded with Mercury'], and I think it’s going to be out in September.”
Brian May added: “It was kind of hiding in plain sight. We looked at it many times and thought, ‘oh no, we can’t really rescue that’.
“But in fact, we went in there again and our wonderful engineering team went, ‘OK, we can do this and this’. It’s like kind of stitching bits together. But it’s beautiful. It’s touching."
The band played the Platinum Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace on Saturday night, and are touring Europe with Lambert this summer.
