The 20 year-old continues her upward trajectory
The Bath-born sensation has seen a year which has propelled her to the very top, after her breakout hits reached huge audiences across social media platform TikTok.
Her 2021 album 'to hell with it' comprises of ten fleeting songs, only two of which last longer than two minutes in length. Her music is inspired by the 90's and 00's eras and is often described as bedroom-pop.
PinkPantheress' album features hits like 'Pain', 'Passion', 'Break It Off' and the most recent hit single 'Just For Me'. Last year, she graced the cover of CRACK Collections, ES Magazine and became the second Spotify RADAR Artist to be supported in both UK and US.
Speaking of her win, she said "I am so happy to be chosen for the BBC sound of 2022. To be put up against such amazing musicians has been an honour and I just hope that I fulfil the people’s expectations of me this year."
Sound of the Year is decided by 160 experts within the industry. They decide who will make the biggest impact on the coming year. Last year's winner was rapper Pa Salieu.
Last year she spoke to the Guardian about her rapid rise to fame and how it doesn't affect her much. "Everything’s on your phone – it almost feels like a virtual game," she said. "I can turn my phone off and then I’m just me a year ago again, in uni doing uni stuff. It doesn’t feel too crazy. It feels good knowing people are listening, but I can turn it off really easily."
Indie band Wet Leg, Mimi Webb, Lola Young Central Cee also appeared on the list for Sound of 2022. Previous winners include Sam Smith, Adele, Michael Kiwanuka and HAIM.
