Three songwriters have made a claim on her 2019 hit
She has been one of 2019's biggest breakout stars, but as Lizzo is learning, there are downsides to fame, too.
The Detroit-born singer and rapper has faced accusations of plagiarism in recent days, specifically relating to her song 'Truth Hurts'.
Songwriters Justin Raisen, Jeremiah Raisen, and Justin 'Yves' Rothman have claimed that Lizzo used the 'melody, lyrics and chords' of a song called 'Healthy', which they wrote together.
However, Lizzo has now filed a lawsuit against the trio, that seeks a 'judicial declaration' that they did not have any involvement with or claim over 'Truth Hurts'. A statement released yesterday said: "The men who claim a piece of ‘Truth Hurts’ did not help me write any part of the song. They had nothing to do with the line or how I chose to sing it.” It added that they had previously withdrawn any claim over the song in April of this year, and suggested that they were now capitalising on Lizzo's success.
She also revealed that she had, in fact, given British songwriter/performer Mina Lionesss a writing credit on the song after admitting that a lyric had been inspired by a tweet from 2017:
I did a DNA test and found out I'm 100% that bitch.

I just took a DNA Test, turns out I’m a credited writer for the number one song on Billboard.

It's not the only royalties war that Lizzo has become embroiled in of late; Cece Peniston has claimed that her 1991 hit 'Finally' had its copyright infringed on the Lizzo hit 'Juice'.
