Some iconic tunes from some iconic films
Writer and director John Hughes blessed the culture with some of the most iconic films of the 1980s, and now the tracks that helped define the films are being released in a box set.
'Life Moves Pretty Fast: The John Hughes Mixtapes' will be released on November 11th, and is sure to be the top Christmas gift for the film or music buff in your life.
The box set features tracks from films like 'The Breakfast Club', 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off', 'Uncle Buck' and 'Planes, Trains, and Automobiles'.
Artists like Kate Bush, New Order, Simple Minds, Oingo Boingo and The Psychedelic Furs, will feature on the box set, which was curated by Hughes' music supervisor Tarquin Gotch.
Gotch said, “John told me he only made movies so he could choose what music to put in them, so as his success at the Box Office grew, and thus his power with the studios, the number of tracks in his films, by up and coming UK bands, steadily grew."
Hughes' son John will write liner notes for the collection, and said the collection "serves as a reminder not just to the musicians he championed in the 1980s, but to how intensely his search for music expanded beyond this era."
"Until his final days, he was still collecting outrageous amounts of music from around the world, galaxies removed from the New Romantic and new wave sounds that, to many, still define him.”
The ending of 'The Breakfast Club' is one of the most famous examples of a licensed piece of music being used in a film, with Simple Minds' 1985 track 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' becoming a global hit after featuring at the end of the famous school comedy.
The box set is available as a 74-track 4xCD or as a limited edition 73-track 6xLP red vinyl, and a 25-track 2xLP, and pre-orders are open now for a November release date.
